Majoring in Gothic & Lolita

For all of your lovely lolitas who are sick of studying biology and business law (that's me... sigh), there are now Gothic and Lolita specific courses at Ueda College of Fashion in Japan! I thought for sure that it was just a rumor, but it's true - this fashion school can teach you all the ins and outs of becoming a lolita or gothic fashion designer.

According to their school website, their curriculum covers fashion drawing, color theory, and fashion theory, as well as the practical aspects of sewing and constructing unique lolita fashion garments within the guidelines of the style. There is even a gothic & lolita history course! Here's some more course curriculum description from their website:

With the help of my Google translator, the head of the program says (get ready for some choppy translation ahead):

Gothic & Lolita clothes, not just anyone can not. The underlying techniques of haute couture. Materials and patterns, colors, designs and silhouettes, in the sense that the technology and acquire a variety of haute couture, unique world that is rocking the hearts of the born. And the attention to detail and passion for clothes, we are creating a new excitement and beauty. Clothing to face trial and error, finding the answer in my own, I think I want to taste the great pleasure of making clothes. On the other hand, is also important force in the world of fashion business. Gothic & Lolita fashion in a major power with the creation of the world to express themselves, to train a force active in the business world, offers a variety of curricula. Please, UEDA knowledge learned in the technical sense, please realize your own dreams. And, please create your clothes to impress people.

What's fascinating about offering a gothic and lolita curriculum at a Japanese fashion school is that it speaks volumes about the worth and identity of the fashion to Japanese culture. I love to see new designers being encouraged to start their own styles, and even designing their own webshops - fostering a new crop of indie lolita brands perhaps? It makes me hopeful that lolita fashion is being set into the culture for the long haul, not as a fly-by-night trend that will fizzle out in a few years. Modern fashion changes quickly, but the broad support the lolita fashion culture seems to be receiving would solidify and promote it for years to come - rather like the long-lasting Goth subculture in America. While I admit that I usually have the rather pessimistic view that eventually lolita fashion will be no more than the memory of a dream, faded and nearly vanished upon waking, but this makes me hope otherwise. It's so refreshing to see a culture cherishing and nurturing its youth culture, and seeing that what has been created by simple kids on the streets has a lasting value. I can only dream that lolita fashion will continue well into the future, continuing to evolve forward and still treasure its past.

Want more info? You can check out the Gothic & Lolita course website (part of Ueda College of Fashion) - but warning, it's all in Japanese, so get out your translator!
