Alice's Tea Cup Giveaway!

Alice's Tea Cup (read my previous article here!) is exactly what a tearoom should be: whimsical, with a wide menu of scones, and full of people that know exactly the difference between Earl Grey and orange pekoe, and would love to tell you. Lolitas will be perfectly at home in the Alice murals, glittery walls, and endless tiered displays of desserts and sandwiches. But what if you're not from New York City? Never fear - Alice's Tea Cup has finally released their new cookbook, with all the magical recipes to create your own wonderland for tea-time.

I'm not very well-versed in cookbooks, let alone the modern cookbooks - the kind of thing one imagines foodies have on an altar somewhere, full of glossy photos and long explanations on where to find obscure spices for even more obscure glazes and marinades. My 'foodie' staple is usually a well-worn copy of the Joy of Cooking - or perhaps an online recipes for the more unusual. I wasn't sure what to expect from Alice's Tea Cup - but when I opened to the first chapter, entitled 'The Answer to "How much glitter?" is "Yes."', I knew this would finally be a cookbook I could relate to.

beautiful photo from the book of various teas

The book has a very fairy-tale approach, beginning their story, like all the best stories, as once upon a time... in New York City. After a short history and ode to the sister duo who dreamed up Alice's, the book launches into a deeply comprehensive, easy-to-follow, meaty-as-shepherd's-pie cookbook. They said they've only written a fraction of their menu (limiting themselves, with difficulty, to only nineteen scone recipes), but this book has everything: their famous scones, brunch options, a raft of soups, sandwiches and salads, a legion of cupcakes, and even their much-loved mar-tea-nis (tea-infused cocktails). Nearly every recipe is infused with a flavor of tea, from bold blacks to the delicately floral and perfumed whites. The recipes range from easy-for-beginners such as Alice's Croque-Monsieur to the advanced, such as Alice's S'mores, which require a kitchen torch (I'd bake more if I got to use a flamethrower! I mean, uh, kitchen torch.)

these cookies! ah!

My favorites? I can't wait to make a host of Alice-themed cookies, such as the pink-and-white chessboard cookies (an adorable twist on the classic chocolate-and-vanilla checkerboard cookie, but and with a unique rose melange tea flavor!) and the linzer card cookies (powdered sugared cookies that reveal a heart-shaped window onto glistening raspberry jam). They also have a recipe to a scrumptious-looking French toast bread pudding made with fruit coulis and creme anglais!

This book also has a tea glossary, instructions on tea-dying in a variety of shades, and the exact art of throwing a tea party!

My favourite Alice in Wonderland character is the white rabbit, because he has a very stylish pocketwatch, and if he is late there will be a big fuss about it because he likes to be punctual.

My favorite Alice in Wonderland character is the Cheshire cat. He has an air of mystery around him and he talks in riddles which makes him all the more unique.

my favorite is of Alice, because she opened my eyes to how individual people make the best people. you don't have to live by the common peoples rules of how to act and dress. you can be your own person. and that imagination is the key to happiness :) <3

My favorite "Alice" character is, however cliche, Alice herself. Everyone in wonderland is baffeling to her and, being a young child, she is easily confused. In the face of such confusion and discord as Alice face, I often give in, halt my progress, turn my back and run with my fluffy tail between my legs. Not Alice, however. Even when faced with the most upsetting of challenges set upon a girl her age, she perserveres evermore. She does not sit down and lay still and cry, as I, and many girls in society today, no matter their age, would have- no. She continues walking (and sometimes running- always forward, never back-) head held high, ever-confident. I honestly envy her determination.

This sounds like a must-have for any tea lover, not simply the Lolita. I have a feeling this will find its way onto my Christmas wishlist.

My favourite Alice in wonderland character would be the Hatter. Nothing sums up the whimsy of Wonderland for me quite like the nonsensical poetry, chair swapping, and riddles of the tea party, and the tea party simply wouldn't be without the Hatter.

my favourite would be Alice of course, because she's a person that would go for adventures. I personally think she's rather lolita-ish as well, and as a lolita, we should be brave and seek for adventures, let it be fun, scary or dangerous because that's what a lolita should be - be ourselves and courageous. :)

My favorite character from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Alice, of course. She is ever the lady, polite to all and never judging a book by its cover. She is not afraid of adventure, or of strange and fantastical creatures and places. Though Alice's pedantic nature seems to leave her short of truly understanding the world, she always exudes a soft, childlike, yet refined air that, to me, is everything Lolita ought to be.

My favorite Alice in Wonderland character is Alice. She manages to make her way through a very strange experience not knowing precisely who she is or what she thinks of the world she has landed herself in. I admire her innocence and 'true to yourself' attitude.

unlike the other commenters, i really like White Rabbit [as he is called in the book]. he has a really interesting personality and ever since i read the book in 3rd grade i felt like i could relate to him because he and i both get so stressed about things so easily! for me, it's usually when i lose stuff, because i never lose stuff. i also had two rabbits whom were white so i thought he was always the cutest. his voice is very reassuring as well; delicate but somewhat friendly--the perfect character for a child like me :)

Ha, I don't think I will be any original saying my favourite character is the Mad Hatter. I loved the motif of never-ending tea party, it's so dandy xD I also have a soft spot for insane characters. He's stylish and likes tea, what else would I need xD

Now excuse me, now that I saw those amazing cookies I have to eat something sweet...

I can't choose anyone but the Cheshire Cat-- the way he smiles while watching the chaos is something I relate to completely.

My favorite character has to be the Cheshire Cat. He always knows what's going to happen, and provides a clue... I think he's like the crazy subconscious that everyone has inside, maybe we have a sixth sense and sometimes we have hunches like the clue the cat has... but the entire knowledge disappears, and we can't make heads or "tails" of the rest of it!

My favorite character is the Duchess, simply because I think a baby pig dressed up like a baby sounds really cute. I'm glad the winner to this contest is random, because I know that's a really lame reason to like a character XD

I love that little deer figurine btw! It's soooo sweet!

My favourite character(s) from AiW are the singing flowers, because it creates such a lovely scene and relates to the song that Alice sings at the beginning. All the different types of flowers with their different personalities was cleverly done.

The Queen of Hearts was always my favorite character, if not Alice herself. The Queen was always the image of complete irrationality and ultimate power; no one ever questioned her bizarre flow of logic. I've always privately imagined that she was always simply misunderstood.

My favorite character is actually not a main player in the story, but actually stems from the poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter" which is recited by Tweedledum and Tweedledee. This character is The Walrus himself. My reasoning isn't very deep and is simply that when I was a child and watched the animated Disney version of the story, I really enjoyed the poem and thought The Walrus was funny. I did however, feel bad for the oysters.

My favorite Alice in Wonderland character has to be Alice's sister. I love her the most even though she is hardly in the book, She reminds me that there is always some sense in chaos and that the adventures we have shape and change us into the person we will someday be

I like the white queen who enters the story through the looking glass. She lives her life backwards in time due to the fact she lives through the looking glass. She is later seen as a white rabbit who influenced her dream

My favourite character from Alice in Wonderland would have to be the caterpillar. His signature phrase, "Who are you?" always gets me thinking, "Just who am I?" And it's not only that. His riddles in the book, the Disney original and the Tim Burton remake are all puzzling for Alice. I don't know about anyone else, but I like to put myself in Alice's place, wondering what I'd do in the event of encountering the caterpillar.

I'd have to say the March Hare, if for no other reason than he's the Mad Hatter in animal form. I love me some crazy animals :) Irrelevant reason, I know, but still.

This book is so delectable looking! And ridiculously inspirational. As if I don't bake enough already, haha.

Ah, this book looks so delightful! I could always use more reasons to bake.

My favorite character is Dodo! He's so...brilliantly stupid? More so in the movie than in the book, but I still love him nevertheless. And poor Bill, the lizard with the ladder...never stood a chance.

To be honest, I think I love the door mouse the most. Maliumpkin, so called in the movie, was a small feisty creature with the gumption to fight even the largest creature, despite her size.

I feel that way some times when I dress up and go out. The world is so big when you feel like the only Lolita around, even though I know that's not true. (But I hang out with Steampunkers, not other lolita, so it's an odd fit ^^; )

What a treat! If I had to choose, and so hard it is, I go with the Caterpillar. The Caterpillar is a treat, though rude, is proud of where he sits. Three inches is a very good height indeed.

It's difficult for me to settle on just a single character, but I suppose my favorite character is likely Alice because I particularly enjoyed Alice's inner dialogue throughout the stories. It was really interesting to hear the logic of a young girl since I'm so accustomed to hearing my own inner dialogue, which is quite different because I'm an adult. In addition to that, the fact that she attempted to use logical thinking to understand such an illogically functioning world made her conclusions even more interesting.

My favourite Alice in Wonderland character has always been the Cheshire Cat. I always loved his sly grin and how even though he was there, it always looked as if nothing that happened had an impact on him.

Mmh... I think my favourite character would be the red queen. She's just so... full of herself. XD I love how she thinks that she's the best and she deserves it all.. And she has the best quote from Alice in Wonderland: 'Off with her heaaad!'

I'm going to have to go with the March Hare as my favourite character. I've always thought of him as a darker, more sinister version of the White Rabbit. Like his evil twin, or something. Actually, that would be a cool photoshoot ^_^

My most favourite character would have to be the Queen of Hearts. Her dominant nature appeals to me, as she commands power and attention! While she is not the nicest of characters, she definitely has won my heart (excuse the pun) in all representations of her, including the most recent Tim Burton film. Also, her way of incorporating hearts into every little detail is tres fashion. I try to wear a little heart somewhere on my person every day, to pay homage to my storybook idol.

Oh this is so beautiful.

Well, my favourite character is the Queen of Hearts, simply because of her dramatic appearance and behaviour. She really impersonates the queen the actual crowd wouldn't like to see and that's kinda amusing, hahaha.

I really have no favorite character, I admire each of them, but I probaby prefer the Mad Hatter above all.
I do not really know why, his character just appeals to me slightly more than the others. :)

yes! this book looks sooo cute! I want to try the recipes sooo baad... hey, i'm even still wearing my apron (just baked cookies for a bake sale, gingerchoco puffs!)

Wel, in spite of the fact that I feel identified with Alice, my favourite character is Chesire cat. Why? I really don't know. His smile makes me have shivers, his color is beautiful (in all the movies/books, it is beautiful always!). His eyes... I feel that I get lost in his eyes. I really love his plays on words and how he behaves... Without forgetting his way of appearing and disappearing!!

Sorry about my BAD english.. I'm from Spain ^^UU

My favorite character is the dormouse because not only does he get to attend a never-ending tea party, but he get's to have endless servings of treacle tart, my absolute favorite desert! I also find his sleepy story-telling adorable. I wouldn't mind living in my own tea pot.

My favourite Alice charachter is the Mad Hatter. He reminds me of myself by being a bit mad and unitentionally annoying! He seems to have no idea that he's mad, and that's kind of endearing. Also it would be like a dream to live in an eternal teaparty <3

My favorite Alice character is so difficult to choose!! I would have to say probably the gryphon or the mock turtle... trying hard to be understood, but having a difficult time getting the point across!

My favorite Alice character(s) have to be Tweedledum and Tweedledee, for the sole reason that "The Walrus and the Carpenter" has to be my favorite poem ever and they're the ones who recite it. It makes absolutely no sense and yet it's pretty beautiful in and of itself. The first time I heard it when I was a little girl I was so upset I cried and I've been enchanted by it ever since. The White Knight comes in a close second though.
For some reason I've always liked the "Through the Looking-Glass" characters a little bit better, even though the original "Alice in Wonderland" is my favorite plot-wise.

That cookbook looks like it's suited for every tea lover out there! (:

My favourite character from the Alice serie's "Through the Looking-Glass" is the Unicorn. He tells Alice to trust him and believe in him even though he calls her a monster... quite a strange guy. He reminds me of so many people that I know, and rather confuses me just like they do. xD

I love the Cheshire Cat! Besides anything I was utterly crazy for his colour scheme in the Disney films as a child (pink x purple? yes yes yes!). Mostly I loved how he was always there, with a quick but confusing word, his love of jokes and misdirection but also the sense that he was very serious underneath it all when he wanted to be. He's a whiteface clown, the most important person there, the only person who knows exactly what is going on, but plays it all for fun...

My favorite Alice character is Cheshire Cat. I love how he moves, so effortlessly and quietly with all the mystery in the world. I especially love how he is depicted in the Tim Burton film, all obsessed with the Mad Hatter's hat.

I think my favorite character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is the catapiller. I love him because he's got that wise man perssona about him, yet he's detatched from the sitiuation. For the short time he is in teh story, I think he plays a crucial role and, in a way, speaks in riddles. He reminds me of the butterfly from The Last Unicorn. I adore the catapiller, and the fact that he smokes a Hooka just makes him that much cooler! XD

My favourite character would most definitely have to be the Mock Turtle- not only is he one big pun, with his complaining about schools and such and his being made up of the ingredients to mock-turtle soup, but he's so depressed and reminds of Marvin the Paranoid Android. His little calf/bull's head is also so cute, too... I'm odd for finding this adorable, aren't I? XD
