On Your Mark...

So, we all know what the end of October is about - Halloween, and with it Halloween Fairs, Halloween Lucky Packs, and plenty of bonbons (as Fancy Nancy reminds us, that's French - and therefore fancy - for candy!) But if you are part of the secret group, the select few, the end of October spells something akin to insanity, to endless amounts of coffee, to late nights, to frenzies of typing. Because November 1st is not just All Souls' Day. It is also...

the first day of Nanowrimo!

Nanowrimo, or National Novel Writing Month, is a project which encourages you to write a 50,000 word novel in one month (which works out to about 1,600 words a day, if you stay on task). Last year I posted about Nanowrimo since as every year, I participate - and I am here again to remind you to get cracking!

Nanowrimo is the month to let out any story in any particular form, a crazy mess that might have a few nuggets of good ideas of good writing buried within it. I've known many lolitas to compete as well, and use the opportunity to write gothic novels about vampires and funerals, sugary Alice in Wonderland tales, or Pride & Prejudice inspired intrigues about arranged marriages, violin lessons, and horseback riding. Your novel can also be written from any country, anywhere in the world, in any language - so everyone can participate. You 'win' by hitting the 50,000 word mark before midnight on November 30th, on a purely honor-based system. You win, primarily, the fun of the experience, the satisfaction of winning, and answering the age-old question of, 'What if I have a novel in me somewhere?!'

I'm not sure what sort of novel I'll write this year - maybe about a sugar-loving vampire with an arranged marriage?! But I can't wait to put together a whole new cast of lolitas, dandies, and aristos to drop into a world I've designed - the ultimate dollhouse!

So will you be writing with me? I'd love to hear your ideas for a lolita Nanowrimo!

Wow, I can't believe 2009 is almost over. Anyway, I may or may not be participating in Nanowrimo, but if I do, I'll be writing a, uh... derived work. In other words, a fanfiction. ...Yeah. Heh.

@dreamingmacaron: I used to be quite the author of derived works back in the day, too!

You have to post the finished story! I would love to see what you come up with.

It's dawning on me now... it IS close, am I allowed to panic now? Because gee, I sure feel like it. I'm writing about pirates this year, so there will be little to no Loli in my book :( Though Fleur borrows some...er...wardrobe inspiration from Alice and The Pirates <3

Anyway, wanna be writing pals? My username is SaffronSugar on the NaNo website!

Yap, I'm very likely doing the novel thing this year. Not necessarily for NaNoWriMo because I might start it before November and end it after the deadline (and seriously, who expects to write a 50,000 word novel in a month and have it be decent?).

Ooh every year I try to do it... but I fail every time because of school XD maybe this time will be different! 8D

@Anonymous: Define 'finished'! Sometimes I reach 50,000 words without being at the end of the story, and whatever is there anyway is just crazy. But I could post the best excerpt/chapter as a special December present!

@SaffronSugar: Sure! My name is rabbittedtea! And I love that you're writing about pirates, one of my novels had a pirate part that I never got round to which was very Alice and the Pirates.

@Little Monarch: Thank you very much! You should go for it :)

@Sniper: It's not supposed to be decent, it's supposed to be the ultimate rough draft to play with :3 Mine are never decent, they just have interesting bits.

@Leaa: I don't always make it but I always try, anyway!

I first learned about NaNoWriMo last year and signed up for it and then never gave it a second thought. Your post served as a great reminder and I've started brainstorming story ideas. I'll do it this year, I swear! If you'd like to be writing pals, I'm 'umitheelf'

This is my fourth year participating in NaNoWriMo, and last year was the first year I actually finished, though I don't care much for the story I wrote XD It was a milestone for me last year and hopefully I'll reach another milestone this year: writing a complete story I actually like! Oh, I'm planning on writing a fantasy this year, just fyi.

P.S. Good luck!:D

It's the first time I hear about this project, such a great idea! <3
Writing is not really my cup of tea, but I have some characters I'd really like to see in finished stories XD
Too bad I don't have time to dedicate myself to that now... maybe next year I'll enter!

I'll be participating for the first time this year. My WriMo name is amrose25.

I'm hoping to get out the rough draft of a standalone novel idea I've been sitting on for a little over half a year. I'm working on the first in a trilogy right now and I thought it be a nice month long break to work on something else and to have something waiting in the wings to pick on while I let the second draft of the trilogy novel rest.

The NaNoWriMo story is about a girl who discovers she's a fetch.

@Himemiya: cute :3

@carouselofcrowns: Ah go for it! I'll have to friend everyone who commented with their usernames :)

@Dani: Very cool :) Good luck to you too!

@Juli: Half the fun is not having time. It's sort of like a forcible break from society!

@A.M. Rose: ooh interesting! Sounds good!

I wanted to do this last year, but I was too busy with college to get anything done. My screen name is Amritsar. What's yours?

This year I'm planning to write a story based on a recent dream I had. It's set it a gray, dream-like sort of world, with kind of victorian/fantasy feel to it. The main character is a girl named Liza, who is something between a muse and a fairy godmother. Her job is to travel around and help various people find happiness. One of these people is an artist who has lost his right hand. She must help him come to grips with the situation, as well as helping him find a way to continue his artistic interests despite it.
